FRESHWATER FISHING REPORT
June 25, 2002
Provided by Jack Randolph
Overview:
Lack of rain continues to cause some problems
on the smallmouth bass
streams. Bass fishing continues in the summer
doldrums, but fishing for blue catfish
is improving. In the western reservoirs, walleyes
are providing some fun, and
throughout the Commonwealth bluegills, redear
sunfish, and redbreast sunfish are
taking crickets and top water offerings with
gusto.
Little Creek Reservoir:
There was considerable action here this past
weekend. Dylan Seibert of Richmond had a striper
that weighed 4 pounds, 11
ounces. Mike Fowler of Williamsburg landed a
husky striper that weighed 16
pounds, 2 ounces. Joshua Ahensey of Grafton landed
four stripers to 26 inches, and
Mike Fowler, on another visit, collected four
stripers to 8 pounds.
Buggs Island Lake:
Stripers are being
caught trolling near the dam.
Lake Gaston:
On the flats immediately below the dam at Roanoke
Rapids
Lake (NC), Bobby Colston at the Tackle Box in
Gaston reports that nice stripers,
weighing 12 to 15 pounds, are taking Pencil Poppers
at dawn. Up in Lake Gaston stripers are
being caught trolling with Stretch 25s and Deep
Running Redfins.
Smith Mountain Lake:
From Campers Paradise we hear that the stripers
are being caught up-lake between Buoys 32 and
53 on live bait, bucktails, and
Sassy Shads. The water level is down 2 feet.
Flannagan Reservoir:
A 24-inch hybrid striper,
weighing 5.89 pounds came to
the scales.
Lake Anna:
At the High Point Marina, Carlos Wood said summer
is officially here and the summer
striped bass trolling
season is now in full swing. Anglers are catching stripers in the main
lake,
trolling from the Power Plant to Stubbs and Holiday
Bridges The area around The Splits has been most
productive. For lures Carlos recommends DD-22s,
Redfins, and Bagley DB3s.

FRESHWATER FISHING REPORT
June 17, 2002
Provided by Jack Randolph
Overview:
The Fathers' Day weekend was not a particularly
great weekend for
freshwater anglers across the Commonwealth. We
noticed a slight increase in the
largemouth bass action and blue catfish continue
to slowly recover from the
spawning ordeal. Low water has become a problem
on the upper reaches James
River, but the conditions are better on the Shenandoah
and Rappahannock
smallmouth bass waters. Bluegills and shellcrackers
offer pretty good fishing and
white perch fishing looks good in the Back Bay
area. Landlocked striped bass
fishing is still a bit on the slow side.
Back Bay Area:
Striped bass, catfish
to 9 pounds, a lot of bass to 3 pounds, and plenty of bluegills are keeping
anglers busy.
Little Creek Reservoir (Toano):
Striped bass dominated
the fishing here this past week. David Rodrigo of Williamsburg landed eight
Friday.
The largest went 6-1/2 pounds. Toff Godfrey of
Williamsburg landed six stripers weighing up to 6-1/2
pounds.
James River (Tidal and Richmond):
Often the catches reflect the numbers of anglers
fishing.
Striped bass fishing
season in the tidal waters is now closed, but there
are plenty of stripers around. Fishing for stripers
on a catch and release basis
while the water temperatures are running high
is not a good idea, because the
exhausted stripers, when released, often die.
Waller Mill Reservoir:
Linda at the Reservoir said O.M. Madison of Newport
News
had several small stripers.
Buggs Island Lake:
Hugh Hamby at the Castle Heights Store said fishing
remains slow below Kerr Dam. Above the dam, from
the dam up five or six buoys,
trollers are catching small stripers,
up to 23 inches, with an occasional
ten-pounder showing up. From the Clarksville
Sports Center, we hear that a couple
of blue catfish in the 20 to 25 pound range were
caught along with a 13-pound
gar. They say trollers operating from Buoys 5
to 15 are catching some stripers on Red Fins. Live
bait anglers are catching some, too. The lake
at 300 plus feet is at full pool.
Lake Gaston:
Bobby Colston at the Tackle Box in Gaston said
the fishing
has been slow this week.
Smith Mountain Lake:
At Campers Paradise, Louis Ratliff said they
are
catching small stripers,
in the 6 to 10 pound range. He said when the stripers quit
their spawning mode at Cedar Key they did not
go to the dam as usual, but they
ran way up the lake to the "S" turns and the
tennis courts. The lake level is about
a foot below full pool. Louis took some guys
out to find bass for a weekend
tournament. Using hookless lures they raised
about thirty bass. Louis said watch
for the stripers to start schooling and breaking
water in a week or two, signaling
the start of good striper fishing with artificial
lures.
Claytor Lake/ New River:
At Big Z's in Radford, John Zienius said the
night striper fishing
on the lake
has improved a little. The river is very low
and some anglers are fishing at night.
Flannagan Reservoir:
Walleyes continue to bite here, but Joe Sperow
said they are mostly being "caught by accident."
Anglers fishing for other fish are
catching them on crickets, nightcrawlers, minnows,
and top water lures. Some
crappies are being caught along with some hybrid
stripers.
Lake Anna:
Stripers are being
caught above The Splits and at the
mouth of Contrary Creek. At Anna Point Marina,
Wayne Turney, address unknown,
weighed a striper that went 20-3/4 pounds. Quite
a few stripers are being caught
on live bait.

FRESHWATER FISHING REPORT
June 10, 2002
By Jack Randolph
Overview:
It was a good weekend to be on the water, which
means that anglers and recreational boaters
were out in force. Fishing this week was only
fair, with early morning and night fishermen
enjoying an edge. Blue catfish have shown signs
of returning to the fray as they complete spawning.
Tidal water bass fishing is also showing some
signs of improvement, but it still has a ways to go.
Smallmouth streams are running low and clear.
A little rain would be welcome.
Back Bay Area:
The water has been low due to northeast winds,
but it is coming back. Dewey Mullins at the
West Neck Marine Center said his customers are
doing well with 5 to 6 pound catfish, and
striped bass running
up to 5 pounds are not scarce.
Buggs Island Lake:
From the Clarksville Sports Center, we hear that
fishing for bass and stripers
is picking up,
but crappie are a little slow, although there
is considerable crappie fishing around the bridge
abutments. From Bobcat's Lake Country in Clarksville,
we hear that stripers are deep, feeding
on shad. At his Castle Heights Store near Kerr
Dam, Hugh Hamby said fishing below the dam has
been slow because of little water being run through
the dam. When the water is running the fishing for
stripers is good, but most are small. Further
down the Roanoke River a striper weighing 24 pounds,
10 ounces was caught. Striped bass fishing in
the lower end of the lake is good and the stripers are being
caught trolling. The water levelin Buggs Island
Lake is 301 feet, which is a foot above full pool.
Smith Mountain Lake:
At Campers Paradise only a few stripers
are being caught early in the morning.
The stripers are moving up the lake and a few
15 and 16-pound fish were brought in.
Lake Anna: Stripers are biting well above The
Splits. They are taking Redfins on top early and
deeper running lures during the day.

FRESHWATER FISHING REPORT
June 3, 2002
By Jack Randolph
Overview: Fishing has changed very little since
last week. The blue catfish are
still spawning and not hitting. Flatheads are
also slow for the same reasons. Bass
fishing is improving some, particularly in the
very early morning as they move into
the typical summer pattern, which features a
good topwater bite in the shallows
early and late, and some deeper water activity
during the day. Stripers have
returned from spawning and are being found in
their usual haunts. Action on the
smallmouth bass streams is very good and sunfish
activity is strong on most lakes
right now.
Back Bay Area:
Striped bass action
has slowed.
Little Creek Reservoir (Toano):
Anglers collected a mixed bag here this week.
Dillon Seibert of Richmond landed a 6 pound,
11 ounce striper
on a
live bluegill. Willy Weber of New Kent caught
fourteen stripers measuring to 32
inches. David Rodrigo of Williamsburg had a 5-1/2
pound striper.
Buggs Island Lake:
Crappies are slow and stripers
have
returned to the lake. At Bobcat's Lake Country they
said the fishing is unchanged from last week.
Look for crappies about 15 feet deep
and troll for stripers with jointed Redfins and
Rebels.
Smith Mountain Lake:
Anglers are catching a few nice stripers.
Brian Gentry, address unknown, landed a 25 pound striper
while fishing with Louis Ratliff out of Campers
Paradise. Another angler had a 18-pounder.
Claytor Lake/New River:
Bluegill fishing in the lake is good, but only
a few stripers
are showing up.
Lake Anna:
Stripers provided
good fishing above The Splits and at the mouths of Contrary Creek and Sturgeon
Creek.
Sassy Shad and suspending baits are good.
Potomac River:
Striped bass fishing
continues to be good across from
Fletcher's Boathouse. According to the folks
at Fletcher's the idea is to fish early
and use cut herring for bait. Joe at Fletcher's
also caught a 3-pound walleye while striper fishing.
He is catching as many as a dozen stripers daily.
Smith Mountain Lake
6/28/01 Linesider from VIRGINIA
There is also a lot of bait in the back of Gills
Creek behind Foxport if you want to fish in that area.
Freelining and planers are getting them right
now, especially in the mornings. Bait will be easier before light.
There should be some good topwater action up
the Roanoke side (from dam),at first light on the right side in
front of Bernard's Landing. This is also a good
place to start trolling sassys and bucktails later in the morning.
Troll on up to at least the State Park area.
Hope this helps. Linesider

FRESHWATER FISHING REPORT
June 25, 2001
By Jack Randolph
Overview:
Fishing this week ranged from very good to very
bad. The blue catfish have returned to
action and some reservoirs report good fishing
for many species. On the down side some of the
smallmouth bass rivers are running high, wide
and muddy making fishing virtually impossible.
Lake Cohoon/Meade:
Earl Jones said one angler caught and released
eight stripers
while fishing Lake Meade.
Chickahominy River:
One angler released a 5-pound striper.
Little Creek Reservoir (Toano):
Excellent fishing reported here. On Saturday,
Robert Harner of Hopewell caught a couple of stripers
weighing
15pounds, 15 ounces, and 14 pounds, 14 ounces.
Sunday, he returned with his son Christian and they went to work
on the stripers. The eachlimited out and the
largest one, 18-3/4 pounds, caught by Christian, was a new
record for the lake. They also had stripers weighing
17-3/4 pounds, 12-1/2 and smaller. Live shad was the bait,
but they caught the shad elsewhere. James said
shad are scarce in the lake, so scarce that the stripers, when
cleaned, were found to have pickerel, crappie,
bass and catfish in their stomachs.
Buggs Island Lake:
Hugh Hamby at his Castle Heights Store weighed
stripers
as
heavy as 16-½ pounds. Hugh said the stripers
are being caught below Buoy 6 in the main lake,
and below Buoy G in Nutbush Creek on trolled bucktails
and spoons. Most stripers range from 22 to 28
inches. Immediately below Kerr Dam it is mostly catfish, but stripers
are being caught on live bait fished under the
bushes between the Steel Bridge and Kerr Dam.
Lake Gaston:
A few stripers
are being caught in front of the Gaston Dam on live shad or deep running
lures.
The shad are hard to find.
Smith Mountain Lake:
At Campers Paradise, Lucy said Lewis Ratliff
had six people fishing,
and all six limited out on nice striped
bass. Roger Johnson and brother Bob, of Roanoke,
had stripers
weighing 25 and 13 pounds. Most are being caught
early and late in the day on top water lures. From
the Parkway Marina we hear that the striper fishing
has been fair in the vicinity of the "S" turns.
Flannagan Reservoir:
Some hybrid stripers
are
also showing up.
Lake Anna:
Stripers are taking
live bait and trolled Sassy Shads. Bo and Scott
Smoot of Louisa had an eight- fish string of
stripers that weighed 42 pounds.
The Splits area is recommended for stripers.

FRESHWATER FISHING REPORT
June 18, 2001
By Jack Randolph
Overview:
Several days of wet, hot and humid weather discouraged
anglers. Some fishing camps report
few anglers, if any, on the water during the
week. Sunday was the best day of the week, resulting in a
varied turnout; good in some areas, poor in others.
Most streams fared well during the week with very
little high water or muddy water reported.
Little Creek Reservoir:
Mike Fowler of Croaker landed a 7-pound striper.
Buggs Island Lake:
At just over 302 feet, the lake is high enough
to put water in the bushes.
Hugh Hamby at the Castle Heights Store rates
fishing as pretty good over all. In the lake the striper
fishing is good for trollers and live bait fishermen
from Buoy 3 to Buoy 10. Some of the best of it is at
Buoys 3 and 4. Trolling bucktails on lead core
lines has been effective. Rusty Rutledge at the Clarksville Sports
Center said quite a few stripers, including many
small ones, were reported being caught at the mouth of Eastland Creek.
Lake Gaston:
At the Tackle Box in Gaston, Bobby Colston said
some stripers
are being
caught trolling, and on live shad near the dam.
Smith Mountain Lake:
From Captain Rick O'Dell, we hear that post-spawn
stripers
are
scattered throughout the lake. Anglers who locate
schools of baitfish will likely find a few large stripers
on them. Smaller stripers are starting to form
in small schools. Planer boards fished with large gizzard
shad, or lines fishing live shad either free
line or under bobbers, are effective. Live bait is working best at
or near sunrise and sunset. Capt. Rick said casting
top water lures or trolling are producing stripers, many
of which are too small to legally keep.
Lake Anna:
From Anna Point Marina we hear that Jim Hemby
of McCotter's Guide service is catching
stripers on live
herring. Trolling is also paying off.
Potomac River:
At Fletcher's Boathouse, we hear that the striper
season in D.C. remains open to
July 31. Stripers
ranging from 20 to 24 inches are being caught near the Boathouse.

Fished Lake Anna on Sunday. Was hoping for a
nice evening striper
bite but they weren't biting in the
normal spots. Caught several nice largemouth
bass 2-3 pounds off shore and points. Fished through dark,
hooking up with some small stripers, bluegill,
and white perch. Best fish of the day was a channel cat that
absolutely hammered my fat rap crankbait.

I have been night fishing all spring throwing
7" rapalas and doing quite well. Lots of 50 fish nights.
That fishing is slowing down with the water temp
being 78. But your best bet would to be at the left bank while
looking at the dam. Be there at first light with
herring and run down rods with a few freelines and work that bank
from 100 yards above where it turns away from
the dam back to the short stretch before you hit the log boom.
Stay tight to the bank where you are in 40 feet
of water and get ready. Two days in the last two weeks I caught
15 and 20 in a matter of 2.5 hours. While running
the bait be sure to throw a 1/4 oz bucktail and fish it slow
back to the boat that should also produce a few
fish for you. The action is pretty much over by 10am.
Have your bait and be there by 5:30 am at the
latest to make the most of your time. Justin

Slow going during the day here. Water is so clear
you can see bottom at 15 - 20 feet. Fished for striper
at the dam early in AM and late last night with
no luck. Converted this AM to bream fishing for the kids,
using crickets just around the corner from the
dam. Caught a bunch of small bream BUT also caught 6 nice
smallmouth using only crickets in about 10 feet
of water. Have seen several good sized bass on beds....
tried everything but the kitchen sink, and they're
not interested. Having a hard rain
tonight...probably won't affect lake for 3-4
days. Lake level at full summer pond. Beautiful up here.

FRESHWATER FISHING REPORT
June 4, 2001
By Jack Randolph
Overview:
Water conditions were not as high as one would
expect, considering the heavy rains we
have had. Nevertheless, high waters and, particularly
muddy, cool water has been a factor. We are
seeing improving fishing for largemouth bass,
the return of spawning stripers to their waters of origin,
and excellent fishing for bluegills, and red
ears. Blue catfish action continues to be slow, but shows signs
of improving. The exciting news this week has
been excellent catches of flathead catfish in the
Scottsville area, and in other locations throughout
the state as well as the first sightings of American
shad in the upper James River.
Back Bay Area:
Anglers experienced very good water conditions
all week, but fishing was
At the West Neck Marine Center, Dewey Mullins
said even a few small
stripers are showing
up.
Suffolk Area:
No large bass or stripers
were reported caught.
Buggs Island Lake:
Anglers are catching a few striped
bass between
buoys 12 and 18 trolling and on live bait. Some
stripers are being caught on top water Red Fins at
night. A few small stripers are also
being caught below the dam. From Rusty Rutledge at the Clarksville Sports
Center we
hear that the upper reaches of the lake are very
muddy. Most of the stripers are below the mud line at
Goat Island. One angler caught 15 to 20 stripers
trolling crankbaits in Grassy Creek Wednesday night.
Staunton River/Leesville Reservoir:
Bait shad have moved up the river all the way
to the dam below Leesville Reservoir where striped
bass are being caught.
Bass are hitting at night at Leesville Reservoir,
where anglers are also catching striped bass
Smith Mountain Lake:
Lucy at Campers Paradise said the stripers
are
starting to move out
of the Cedar Keys area where they attempt to
spawn. Several citation stripers were caught this week.
Bob Persinger of Claytor Lake landed a striper
near the dam that weighed 25 pounds, 5 ounces.
Flannagan Reservoir:
Quite a few hybrid stripers
are being caught, but nearly all are just under legal size. Anglers are
catching big bluegills and plenty of pan size
catfish.
Lake Anna:
Most stripers are
being caught around Stubbs Bridge, Jetts Island, and Rose Valley. Some
are also in the back bay of
Contrary Creek. Guide Glen Briggs recommends
top water Redfins early in the day, and deeper
running lures later in the morning.
Potomac River:
The striped bass
season in the Potomac at D.C. opened June 4. The
presence of herring in the river has raised hopes
that there are plenty of stripers still hanging around.
Anglers using cut herring also landed some stripers
to 5 pounds which had to be released.

braking water. Live bait fisherman has been pulling baits by the main
and secondary points and catching good
numbers of fish from the Boardwalk to the bridge. Trolling is catching
fish but not as good as they should be.
Rex Smith on the Blackwater side of the lake said that Fish are being
caught on live bait, and trolling
is starting to pick up but is still slow for this time of year.
Rex said the fish are on the move so you need to look for
them and try to stay on them when you find them. Rex had good luck
with E. B. Padgett catching a 28 LB 12 oz.

on planers 10 feet from the bank. Have caught
some big fish in all the regular places around the s-turns and
State Park. They will be showing up en-mass all
over the lake before you know it. Look for breaking fish in the
early morning. I have seen them breaking all
the way from the dam to the park. A tennis shoe with hooks will do,
but a bucktail to the outside of the school gives
up the bigger fish. Night fishing has been on and off. I've only been
able to go twice, once I got plenty, second time
only a few Bass bit. I twill be getting better this week. Thundersticks
were the bait of choice. Redfins didn't do much

about 12 pounds
June 1 on the north side of goat
island. The next 4 days I caught nothing at all, I fished from

fishing in the vicinity. Do not believe that we saw any shad

My buddy and I fished from 6:00
AM to 1:30 PM at Kerr Lake Dam
and just off Striper
Point. We slow trolled live bait
(small bream) and various crank baits for over 4 hours without
a strike.
Just about the time we were going
to give up and head for the hill, I decided to try something
new. We tied on some new crank baits
we had just purchased from Dick's, large "Lightning
Shad" , blue tint. These are very
agressive deep running crank baits, and will run 25-30 ft deep
when trolled at high speed.
We almost immediately had our first
strike of the day, and boated a nice 8-1/2 pounder. About
45 minutes later..another strike,,,and
we boated a beauty, 12-1/2 pounds. Since we had now
used up both the trolling motor
batteries, we decided to call it a day. An especially good day
because I caught the biggest Striper.
We caught both fish in approx 85 feet of water, off Striper Point.
Wish I knew what we would have done
if we had started with the Lightning Shad in the
morning. You can bet we will next
time. Submitted by: wayne.l.parker@worldnet.att.net
