Tips from Gus!
Red wigglers and night crawlers are popular baits for dock fishing. They can be purchased at tackle shops and convenience stores. Unused worms will live if stored in a
refrigerator.
Roanoke River At Weldon Fishing Report (4/28/05)
WELDON, N.C. In with the striped bass. Out with the shad.
Fisheries biologist Kevin Dockendorf said the electrofishing sampling on Monday yielded about 500 striped bass. The majority was small male stripers, but some decent-sized females stripers appeared in the samples also. Shad are all but gone

Dockendorf said. “Everything is pushed back. … But it’s definitely time. Stripers will be packed around Weldon. It could be like wildfire for the next two weeks.”

David Hart, a fisheries technician with the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission who fished the upper Roanoke last weekend reported fishing Saturday and Sunday, experiencing good success with large minnows. He also reported seeing other anglers catching striped bass on bucktails and spoons in the early morning. While Hart heard about an angler catching a 30-pound striper over the weekend, he didn’t see the fish.

Striper Report for the last week in April.

The fishing was pretty decent this weekend, nothing to write home about but good.  My theory is that the fish have ran up the creeks to spawn. Most of the areas I suggested last week have gone a bit cold.  I'm gonna stick with my recommendation from last time though and that is to fish the mouths of all the big creeks.  Christopher run, (window pane, rose valley), Sturgeon, Terry's, etc.  The fish that I believe are up stream
trying to spawn will be back soon.  So think creek mouths for a while. Pretty soon all the stripers will be in the main lake around the splits again.  The bait I had the most luck with this past weekend were the Herring.  I don't care what size shad you had they wanted the herring. I have been going out before dawn and using as light to bring them in. I sit for a while and wait then start throwing the net.  It takes some time but you will find them.

Until next week happy fishing.

Catfish are plentiful between the I-85 bridge and Kerr Dam. Many anglers have weighed fish of 30 to 50 pounds at Holly Grove Marina and at Castle Heights Grocery. Bass fishing is sporadic. Walleye of 4 to 7 pounds are biting near the dam. Crappie are abundant in the creeks. Ed Royster of Clarksville caught a 2.16-pound crappie. Stripers of 15 to 18 pounds are being caught in the lower end on live bait. Crappie are deep, scattered and suspended in the creeks, but it's easier to catch the catfish that have moved in..
