Striper Fishing Report 6/30/02STRIPER FISHIN' WITH GUS !
June 30, 2002
There has been a lot of trolling activity in the mouths of Davidson and Mountain Creeks.
I spoke with one angler who was using down riggers. He stated that " fish were biting
late into the morning on lines set 40 to 60 feet deep." Most days he catches 5 to 10 fish
before noon. Stripers are also being caught between Marker 1A and the Cowens Ford Dam.
Live Bait is being slow trolled while suspended at varying depths below the boat.
Folks fishing after dark are catching stripers trolling artificials, live baiting or casting
lures to lighted docks and bridges. Up-lake stripers are active between Markers 18 and 23.
Small schooling fish can be found around the islands at daylight. Live herring and shad
continue to be the baits of choice. Anglers fishing with me this week enjoyed excellent
early morning fishing. Thursday Jim G., an airline pilot, and his father- in-law Jerry,
boated and released 33 striped bass. Their fish were caught on points close to the old
river channel. Live blueback herring were used as bait. Cloud cover and a light wind
allowed the fish to feed well into the morning. The next day Joe C. and his family
group landed 14 stripers along with incidental catfish and large mouth bass. Friday's
fish were found feeding along a steep drop off near the old river channel. Saturday,
Joe Midkiff and I fished for a couple of hours and landed 34 stripers. The biggest fish
weighed a little over eight pounds. Joe believes in keeping the smaller legal size fish
and releasing the larger fish. A picture was taken of his 8-pound striper before it was
released. The Hot Spot of the week is the edge of the old river channel from Marker 6
to the Peninsular Yacht Club. The lake level is 97.2 ft., down 2.8 ft. from full pond.
The water surface temperature at Marker 10 is 83 degrees. Additional information about
Lake Norman striper fishing is available on the web at www.lakenormanstriperfishing.com.
Tips from Gus
v South Carolina Fishing licenses expire on June 30, 2002
v Try catching bait fish with a Sabiki Rig.
v Topography maps of Lake Norman are available at local tackle shops.
v Live bait rods should have a light action tip and be 7 to 9 ft. long.
v 1/0 circle hooks work well when using average size bait.

Fished Badin from daylight till 3:15 caught 1 Lg mouth 5-6 lbs on gizzard caught the night
before in my secret bait hole. Marked bait and what I thought was stripers all day. Are there
realy stripers in this lake ?? Ate speggitti instead of stiper but had a good time. I am looking for
a new fishing partner for the summer that loves fishing at least half as much as me. Seems like
my old buddies always have a excuse.I fish most every saturday and think about fishing all
other days. ron w. stripermanLake Norman

Went with Backcountry Saturday morning to verify the stories of large numbers of stripers being
caught in June on Lake Norman (still hard for me to believe).
Left his dock at 5:30 A.M. and rode to a place where the river bed (75 feet deep) curved fairly
close to the bank and points went right out to the channel. Dropped 4 downlines with S.C.
blueback herring to the bottom and looked around. Fished for a half hour, nothing. Picked up
and moved 500 yards to another identical spot (channel bend near point). Did the same thing
putting out baits to the bottom (35-45 feet). 5 minutes later saw a big school of bait and fish.
All 4 rods went down, caught all 4 fat healthy 3 to 4 pound stripers. We kept putting baits out
and as soon as we hit bottom, picked up 2 cranks, bam another fish.
By 7:00 A.M. we had a limit of 3 to 4 pound keepers in my cooler. We caught 34 stripers all
together. We kept smaller fish and released bigger ones. The biggest striper was the 28th fish
at 8lbs. Took a picture of him/her and released. It was like going to fishing school. We would
move from the deep water up to the point (picking the spots on the x-15). We would get there,
see the fish on the depth finder and more than once, all 4 rods went down (almost lost 2
because the rod holders weren't tight enough). Went back to the 1st spot when the fish left the
2nd spot and caught a bunch there too. At around 9:30 the fish quit biting and moved somewhere
to rest and stay cool. So did we. The whole thing was so stressful that I went in to work
Saturday afternoon to calm myself back down.
thanks BC

My father, grandfather, and I put in at lake gaston, at the steel bridge. We were on the lake at 5:45am.
We pulled redfins over the pipeline a few times, caught a keeper striper by the steel bridge and then
powered up to the 85 bridge. Still pulling redfins, my grandfather hooked into a citation walleye,
in the area of 3-4lbs. We continued pulling the redfins, and I hooked into a huge striper
across from the "flats." We had to chase it in order to keep it from spooling us, and then I waged
a battle with this fish for who knows how long. When we finally got the fish into the boat, I was shaking.
A 14lb 8oz striper, my biggest one yet, caught on a black and chrome deepdiving redfin._________________________________________
Lake Norman
STRIPER FISHIN' WITH GUS !
June 23, 2002Summertime striper fishing is in full swing. Lake Norman stripers are feeding early and again after dark.
Anglers fishing at these times are enjoying the wake free waters at daylight and a moonlit lake at night.
The river channel and mouths of major creeks below marker 13 are yielding stripers to anglers that slow
troll live bait, or pull deep diving lures with lead core line and down planers. Live bait fishermen are
using shad, herring and shiners, while popular artificial baits include deep diving Red Fins, 1 to 2
oz. Roadrunners and large Bucktails. Clients fishing with me this week enjoyed varying degrees of success.
Tuesday, Phil G. and his son Barrett, caught a near limit of stripers in deep water. The following day, a
group celebrating Zach's 9th, birthday, caught and released most of the 21 stripers they boated. Saturday,
Jim S and his son Jamey landed 12 fish in spite of a strong northeast wind. Lou M. and I fished for a
couple of hours Sunday morning. We boated and released 13 stripers before 9:30am. The method of
fishing used this week is called down lining. Live bait is suspended 20 to 50 feet below the rod tip in
water 30 to 70 feet deep while the boat is maneuvered by an electric trolling motor.
Call Gus at 704 896 1704 for additional information about Lake Norman striper fishing or to book a fishing trip.
The Hot Spots of the week are the points and humps in the mouth of Davidson Creek.
The Best Bait of the week is Blueback Herring.
The lake level is 97.6 ft. down 2.4 ft. from full pond.
The water surface temperature at Marker 10 is 83 degrees.Tips from Gus
v Check the expiration date on your fishing license
v Wet hands before handling bait or unhooking fish

Fished up river of State Park. Stated early and got in on a good top water bite right at sun up.
Fish quit until they started pulling water, then caught a few good ones on 3" flukes and Zara puppy.
Fish very finicky but a good day none the less. Cat fish hiting up river around the A-frame house in holes.
No stripes even though we netted good bait. Thanks to Ron Ledbeter for teaching
me about this lake, may he rest in peace. He and his TV show taught me and many other
people a lot. TLSUBJECT: Highrock / Badin

Brent and I blew the dust of the downriggers and leadcore setups and headed to Highrock early in the a.m.
We took about a dozen or so large herring (thanks to Brent) and tried those the 1st hour or so.
Only had a couple of skinned tails to show for our live baiting efforts. Switched to artifical and
pulled all the 20+ foot water we could find, nothing. At about 9:30 we decided to headto greener pastures.
Launching and loading was a nightmare at Highrock with the water being down so low.
Some guy infront of us was trying it in a 2wd truck. Needless to say, he had to be pulled out.
That whole fiasco took every bit of an hour. Was back in the water on Badin around 11am.
Trolled from north of palmers around towards alcoa, with no takers. We marked
most fish in 40-50ft of water, but couldn't talk any of them into biting. Better luck next time.

Hello everyone,
I am trying to give fishing reports as often as I can, I think it is good for the fishery and the club. Went out
early and fished between marker 6 and 10. Caught some 3 to 4 inch shad at ivy hill ramp (dock). Lost 2
nice stripers, both hit on live bait. Also did some Trolling with leaded line, soft plastic shad and light spoon
(double rig setup) had no luck. Thanks for all the fishing updates, this club sure beats Smith Mountain Lake

See Crawdads post below, they did pretty good sitting on the RR tressel up from Bullocksville. Me and
Bud's Girl ended up at the Rockwall Friday night to get out of the wind.. It was pretty tough trying to
navigate through the Cut Thru at night. After (3) try's I ended up going around the island. Bait came to the
lights real quick and the catfish and white perch kept me busy most of the night, but only one throw back
striper. We had loads of fun and did a little fishing too. Quite an adventure to be on Kerr at night, all night.
I'd forgotten how bad it feels the next day without sleep and how hard it is to tie on hooks at night.Buggs Island (Kerr Lake)

Friday night was very good! Sidekick And I ended up with 4 keepers and at least that many though backs.
The largest ran 14.5 LBS. The bait was slow to come to the lights but once it did the fun began. The cats
and the white perch were all nihgt long. Saturday night was good also.
We boated two Keepers and three though backs. LOTS of catfish(no great sizes).
We fished the RR tresel in Nutbush Creek. We anchored in the channel where the RR tresel drops off
into the channel ~65 ft of water droped submesable lights. We caught all our fish on downrods 40 ft deep.
The bait of the day was small Herring, 4" to 6".
Good times!!!
Rockchaser Caught 3 nice keepers also. He fished the same area.

STRIPER FISHING REPORT
June 16, 2002Stripers are feeding off the edges of river and creek channels. Start fishing between 5:00 am and 6:00 am
to improve your chances of catching summer stripers. The morning bite can be fast and furious.
On a trip earlier this week three lines had hook ups before the fourth bait hit the water.
Shad and herring continue to attract more stripers than any other bait. They should be fished on down
lines suspended 20 to 70 feet below the boat. The lake's water temperature is in the low to mid eighties.
Fish are moving deeper where the cooler water holds more oxygen. Look for fish from marker 13 to
Cowans Ford Dam. Active fish can also being found between the Railroad Bridge and I-40. Stay away
from the hot hole affected water around the Marshall Steam Plant and the McGuire Nuclear Plant. Darwin
and Marshall, both of Lincolnton, had limited catches Saturday morning. Sunday, Tom A. and Dennis N.
from Troutman caught limit stringers also. We fished deep river points and used blueback herring both days.
Call Gus at 704 896 1704 or visit his web site at www.lakenormanstriperfishing.com for additional information
about Lake Norman striper fishing. The lake level is 97.9 ft.or 2.1 below full pond. The surface water temperature
at Marker 10 is 82 degrees. The Hot Spot of the week is area between the mouth of Davidson Creek and the

LAKE NORMAN
STRIPER FISHING REPORT
June 9, 2002Summer stripers are cruising the edges of deepwater creeks and the old river channel on Lake Norman.
Fishermen are locating large schools with their depth finders then down lining live bait or dropping jigs to
trigger strikes. Fish are shallowest at daylight, 20 to 30 ft. They move to deeper water by 7:30 or 8:00.
Anglers suspending baits 40 to 70 deep are catching stripers through midmorning. On calm mornings some
fish surface feed in large coves and on shallow flats. If you see fish rolling, stop and make a few
casts or pull live baits through the area. Shad and blueback herring are the preferred baits but anglers
using big shiners are reporting excellent catches. Shiners do not have the flash and action of shad or
herring so the bigger the shiner the better. Barry P. and his group celebrating the high school graduation
of one of his sons caught 16 stripers on Wednesday. They fished in deep water using blueback herring on
down lines. Sunday, Charles and his wife Ellenda of Charlotte caught 7 stripers up to 6.5
pounds. The stringer was complete when Charles landed a 20-pound blue cat. The big fish was caught
on a spinning rod spooled with 10lb test line. Call Gus at 704 896 1704 for additional information about
Lake Norman stripers or to book a fishing trip. The lake level is 98.4 or 1.6 ft below full pond and the
water surface temperature is 81 degrees at marker 11. The Hot Spot of the week is the old river channel
from marker 1A to marker 13.Tips From Gus v Down lining is the suspension of baits at some level between the surface
and the bottom of the water column.
v A good starting point is 20 to 30 ft.
v When you detect fish on your finder adjust baits to a depth slightly higher
then the depth indicated by the arches.
v How to rig a down line:
v Place an egg sinker on your line followed by a bead than tie the line to a two-way swivel.
Attach a 3 to 6 ft piece of leader material to the other end of the two-way.
Than tie a hook to the terminal end of the leader. Bait the hook with a shad, herring or shiner.
v Rods should be placed in holders that are horizontal to the water surface.
v Reel drags should be light enough to prevent line breakage.
v Casting reels with level winds and clickers are recommended.GUS GUSTAFSON morning. You can bet we will next time. Submitted by: wayne.l.parker@worldnet.att.net

Mark, I am not sure on the bait situation right now..the past 2 months it has been very tough to come by.
.Most of the bait is usually found in garr crk (right accross from the Whitney Landing) and coves from garr crk
back to the damm that divides tuckerstown & badin..i always put in at whitney landing but the alcoa landing
is top notch.. most of the fish right now are being caught right at the main lake point called palmers island
or in the alcoa channel coming out from alcoa landing..if you put in at alcoa the first main point you come to
on the left is what i call the palmers area..the are tons of very nice humps in the alcoa channel to palmers..
i have been getting my bait at h/rock and transporting to badin..if you do put in at alcoa and need bait, make that left at
palmers and kind of bear to the rt and follow that main lake area to to garr crk on the rt and whitney will be on the
left..garr crk is bordered by tons of smaller homes, if you get to the tressel that go over the lake, you have just passed
whitney and garr but only by 1/8 of mile (if that) but the damm will be just ahead a 1/2 mile or so under that tressel ..
hope this helps and good luck..i will be trying my luck tomorrow at h/rock very early..

Got on the water at 8:15am.... fished a point with a crig for a while, nothing. Moved a little deeper and
started throwing a Fat Free Shad Fingerling and BAM! Pulled like a 3lb+ fish at first then started pulling very
very hard and deep. After a few minutes of him taking drag from my spinning reel with 8lb test, and me reeling on
him, I finally got him to the boat, a 10-3 striper. First time I caught a striper over a pound at falls....
Anyone know how Falls is progressing as a striper fishery?SUBJECT: Badin

I thought I was going to be empty handed but 1 hour before time to be at the dock the fish moved in
and got 4 fish in four passes. I did loose a 15+ lb. fish at the boat at around 11:00, got tangled up in other line.
I also got a 17 1/2" striper early (should of stretched him) along with several large mouths. It was a tough day
but it pays to never give up. Good time, great people, hope to do it again. I am going to try some new spots
in the morning. Good fishing Jim Willett (Decoy)Badin

Hey, Some lakes are harder than others. Badin Lake in North Carolina is a hard lure lake day or night.
I can tell you from experience Lake Murray and Clark Hill have both produced quality fish trolling leadcore
line at night with Rapala Slivers. I have found that Stripers are often in 24 ft humps at night. You need to get a
good graph so you can find the bait line. If you can get your plug to run within that bait line at night, you have a
good chance of catching good stipers. I know for sure 26 stipers between 4-15 pounds were caught

Wednesday while trying to get shad in cove, saw first schooling action in a long time.
I thought shad. Got amonst them and threw net. Turned out to be large blue back herring about 10-12" long,
later I found out full of eggs. While throwing net to schools of herring I caught & released white bass,
white perch, largemouth bass, channel cats. Also something I had never done before, tossed net & retrieved
5 stripers about 15" each in 1 cast. The spawning BB's had everything whipped into a frenzy. Partner &
I remarked that we wished we could just stop and fish the school with light tackle & have a little fun. No large
fish in that area as near as we could tell. Released all non-shad & non-herring safe & sound. Did better netting
]bait than we did fishing. Caught 3 stripers on cut, 1 cat, several pulls we should have caught.Badin

I may try to fish the tourney Saturday as well. I should of fished the one last Saturday. We had a 15,
two 12's two 10's and several 8 & 6 pound fish. Picked them up trolling off points. I am sure if I do fish
the tourney I won't catch a fish. Good Luck To All. JimSubject: Lake Gaston

Got to steel bridge at 7:15 headed down to where upper Gaston
broadens out and had 3 boats company;pulled side planners and free lines for
1 hour w/no hits. Watched as bass fisherman pulled in large cat30-35lbs. on
the flat upstream of duck blind. Back to river below damn for rest of
morning w/only one 5# brought to boat.None of fish caught below damn have
ever had red sores as all we have ever caught seem to have on Kerr Lake;
your thoughts on this and if cooler water of discharge below damn will hold
stripes during summer months? Saw pics of tourney and winners; you've done an excellent job
w/creating the site and all the improvements.

Found bait in Fred's cove. Fished several humps late afternoon into early evening without success.
I did not hear of or see anyone else do any better. I saw several boats trolling with downriggers. Maybe the
fish have moved deep?? Happy fishing.

Went to Buggs this weekend with some friends of mine, we trolled saturday and sunday in the
mornings and evenings. Caught one striper Friday at the Graveyard, but it was not a keeper.
Other boats were catching fish. We did not catch any more. Stripers were caught along the
rockwall, Gilligans Island, Rock Hole, Vido Hole and Ivy hill. There were a lot of throw backs
small striper, and some keepers. thanks Submitted by: Striperboat@aol.comKerr Lake

Shadrap and I drifted live bait from the cut-through to #6 all day. We marked fish on and off all day around #5, landed
one keeper (6 1/2 lbs) and missed two others. It sounded like the trollers faired pretty well in the early morning
between #5 and Striper City.

Looked like a great day. Mostly cloudy, the heat wave of the last two weeks broke slightly, threatening to
rain and little boat traffic. The problem was, for me, no bites. Fishing shiners from 2"-5" in length at varying depths
from 8'-30' along drop-offs and across the mouths of bays while drifting or trolling with the electric motor. My
electronics were without signs of fish for most of the day until I went out near the golf course. Heavy concentrations
of fish appeared on my electronics from the shoal westward about 300 yards as the water transitions form 6' to 40' .
I put two rods out with shiners and drifted through the schools. The shiners got excited but were not taken. Tried
shad raps, stump thumpers, and deep spinners and still had zero bites. Some topwater feeding was taking place on
the southeast part of the island that is closest to the golf course, so I tried pop r's with the same disappointing results.
I am somewhat new to this lake, but I like the layout and will thankfully listen to local advice. Also, I am in the
process of learning how to throw a cast net for shad and would truly appreciate advice on where and when to throw
for shad and how to clearly id them on the electronics.Subject: Kerr Lake fishing on tuesday

got in the water at 5:30 but it took about 2 hrs to get nice bait..ended up with 100 shad and started fishing at about
8am..caught 2 fish right off the bat (6lb & 4lb) and missed a couple more..caught a 3-4lb lm in 70ft of water but no
other fish (at least until after i left at 3:30pm)..left mr nunn as he headed to private t/ment which ran from 4-10pm..
i will tell you that his 50 gal vest tank is the machine of all machines..we kept at least 100 bait in the tank and they
came out better than when they went in. thanks again for the great time mr nunn and i hope the t/ment was yours

Caught a pair of 13 lbrs fri and several in the 5 to 6 lb range. Fished with b man sat and caught a few small ones
early in the day. Fished a local t-ment from 4 til 9 pm sat and got skunked. Darn it hurts to be honest sometimes.
Went down monday around lunch, made 3 casts in the mouth of freds, the first of which yielded 68 perfect 4 to 5
inch gizzard shad. Saw the whole top of the net light up with flashes on the way down. Got about 120 bait and i was
off. Caught 5 and missed about that many within the first few hrs then nothing. Still blown away with this super tank.
Found this stuff called better bait that i put in the tank and it really works great. Turns the water light blue and really
keeps the shad kickin. Kept them for close to 10 hrs and not a one died or even got tired. Gave 2 dozen away to a
friend and ended up putting back 4 dozen or so. The darn things were actually jumping out of the net as i was trying
to put them back in the lake. I don't see how you could ask any more out of a bait tank than that this time of year.
Any body looking to make their own should look at this design for sure. Tight lines to all that get to go.... Nunn out

caught 3 stripers on sat and several lm bass. Caught bait at freds. Had 130, 3 to 6 inch gizzard shad in the new
50 gal. vest tank by 9 am. Man them shad never had it so good. This thing looks like a high tech spa for shad.
Very easy to clean and keeps the water in perfect shape. You wouldn't believe what comes out of the scale catcher
in the first hr or so. Anyway, 13 hrs later at 10 pm i let 50 or 60 of some of the best looking shad go i had ever seen.
These things were in better shape than when i had caught them. They were literally jumping out of the bait net. Had 1
die all day and he was a re-hook. If you can't tell by now i'm very impressed with this tank. does everything its
supposed to and then some. Highly recommened. Got to the lake sunday at 5 pm and caught 5 stripes,2 lm, and
1, 12 lb cat. The fish are def in the main lake and seem to be off humps and points. Seems the upper end is a
waste of time here lately. Well i've taken up enough board space for now, good fishin to all that get to go

I'm lost, I fished live bait night and day and could not buy a strike. Do the stripers on Lake Norman just vanish
when mothers day arives or have they gone deeper than ever? Up until the end of april it was no problem
locating fish, just waiting for them to turn on at some point during the day, but now its depressing to fight the
traffic and still no BITE. Lookout is right up the road, but I'm unfamiluar with the river section. HELP!!
6/5/2000 12:56:00 PM TomB says try this on the next full moon
Start at the channel marker across from Duke Power where the power lines are. Heading down river, put two
deep diving redfins behind the boat, put the boat in 20' and follow the contours, keeping the boat around 20'.
When you get to the next point pick the baits up [if you haven't marked or caught anything] and run straight across
towards the very large commercial property for sale sign. Heading right at it when the boats gets back up into 20'
make a 90 degree turn to the left and fish that flat all the way around the point. Let me
know how you do. Best night in the summer is 47 from those two spots. Troll as slowly as you can. I try to stay
around 2mph.Buggs Island (Kerr)

Was up late Fri. afternoon. Heard they had an awesome early morning (between 16 and 17)(one boat said he
had 11 stripers and a cooler of cats). Nothin doin fri afternoon until just before dark when I heard reports of
them being schooled on the Occonechee side by Bouy 17. Saw one caught and about a 15lber in another guy's cooler.
They must have scattered cause thats all we saw. Caught one greenie but otherwise in the wrong place at the

My buddy and I fished from 6:00 AM to 1:30 PM at Kerr Lake Dam and just off Striper
Point. We slow trolled live bait (small bream) and various crank baits for over 4 hours without
a strike.Just about the time we were going to give up and head for the hill, I decided to try something
new. We tied on some new crank baits we had just purchased from Dick's, large "Lightning
Shad" , blue tint. These are very agressive deep running crank baits, and will run 25-30 ft deep
when trolled at high speed. We almost immediately had our first strike of the day, and boated a nice 8-1/2 pounder. About
45 minutes later..another strike,,,and we boated a beauty, 12-1/2 pounds. Since we had now
used up both the trolling motor batteries, we decided to call it a day. An especially good day
because I caught the biggest Striper. We caught both fish in approx 85 feet of water, off Striper Point.
Wish I knew what we would have done if we had started with the Lightning Shad in the
