I carried a party out today for half a day and we whacked'em good thanks to Ltlweed and company. I gave him a call when I saw his trailer at the boatramp and he was already on the water looking. We joined the search and within 30 minutes Shane found the fish about 300 yards from where we were so we trolled over and jigged up 5 before the school move. We started the search again and I got on them just a 100 yards or so from where we were. We jigged another 3 and ended the jigging with 8 fish. Then we started trolling with leadcore and within 15 minutes we had a single and a double. The guy reeling the 2 fish on one reel had the best time with one 8lb and one 5lb fish. We called it a day after an hour of trolling. We had 11 fish and Steve, Larry and Steve all three are now offically hooked. (Kinda wierd having 2 Steves on the boat) Lisa and I are headed back in a little bit and are staying with friends at the lake so we can get started a little earlier. Special thanks again to you Shane(Oh great Whack Master of the jig)  Tight lines! Lanny

got lines in the water by 9:15am and it was two hours before we got our first fish. We kept 3 and lost 2. We saw lots of people fishing but not alot catching. The secret is in the lure. We pulled different colors but it was Termite that hooked us up with the right ammo.    http://www.tidalfish.com/forums/buggs-island-striper-club/265202-wednesday-fishing.html

fishmaster   6/15 Report
I trolled for about two hours today down at satterwhite point. The bite was on and I caught 6 stripers in the range of 18 inch to 24 inch. I was trolling with lead cords and it was 7 colors out and was using bucktails. The fish were down deep and starting to school up. I caught them off of a point and it was straight across from satterwhite marina. It was near the channel, in about 35ft to 45ft of water.

Clay Pigeon
22 lb 2 oz Buggs Island Striper
I shoud have sent this in sooner. Our daughter was up last weekend, and Sunday morning we were trolling around the Eastland creek area when this fish hit a Sutton spoon on 5 1/2 colors of lead core. It took us a while to get it in, but here it is. We caught an additional 8 or 10 fish that morning, but most were in the 20 to 22 inch range.

Evidently I drove right over the stripers that were actually biting (reports said Satterwhite was the spot today). Anyway:
Left Flemingtown about 9:15 and headed up lake. Wind was blowing harder than expected out of the north, so lots of chop and rollers on the way up. I stopped at the B bouy and put out two lead core rods (one double bucktail, one bucktail and Storm) and one crankbait (DT16) on braid. Marked plenty of fish near the channel, ranging from 20' to 60' deep. I stayed pretty close to the channel and then rounded the corner towards bouy 2. Once again, there were also fish hanging around #2 and the norht bend in the channel. Got no bites and heard some other people talking about Striper City and Rock Wall, so trolled the north channel edge up there. I had my only bite of the day coming into striper city, and never saw what it was since it came off about 30' behind the boat. Was not very big, seemed to get heavy and then light again, so probably related to when it had its mouth open.Spun back south at the Rock Wall and entered the southern edge of the channel aroound bouy 4. Thermocline was at 40' and a fair number of fish were hanging just above it. No bites.
Rounded the furthest bouy out from the big island across from bouy A, trying to stay in 30' of water. Unfortunately, the striped bouy only marked one of the shallow spots, so I lost all three rigs when I hit the next 20' hump. Was 1:30, disgusted at losing all rigs (I tried to recover by backing down the line against the wind, but had to cut them free.Ran back down to Flemingtown where one of the NC Angler website members saved the day by helping me load the boat back on the trailer (may not of needed it, but it was nice and did make it quicker). Anyway, thanks to our member with the Sundance 201 bay boat for the assist, you helped turn a slightly crappy day back to a nice one. I think I am done with lead core. Comes off the spool (Penn 309) poorly and snags bottom way to quick if you have to stop for some reason. Pretty sure I can get the same depths with braid and a little larger set of bucktails or just run 3 ways with a diving plug.

Well it has been awhile since we have been to the lake fishing. We fished out of Sidekicks new boat for the first time, it is now initiated to shad scales catfish slime and some nice striper slime. We started the day in Clarksville tiring to catch bait with out much success. We through from 4:00am to 8:00 am without even catching one bait. We loaded up and drove all the way to Nutbush and was going to launch there and try our luck, before we launched we decided to run up to the Ace hardware and see if they had any shade for sale. They did have some nice herring and we picked up a few dozen. We drove back up to Ivy Hill and launched. We fished what was left of the day up around the panhandle in the main lake and ended up with 7 fish for the day. There was a ton of boats fishing off of eagles point across from Ivy hill. That is where the first place fish came from. Most of our fish came off of down lines 26 feet down. We did catch some on flat line later in the day. The trick for us seamed to be running across points that where adjacent to deep water. The day started out bad but we had tons off fun once we got on the fish. Nice to see that there was a decent turnout for the tournament.
Next weekend will be our anual night fishing trip for the last of the striper fishing untill fall. maybe we will see you up at the lake.

Reports from friends fishing on Friday and Saturday were for good fishing but bait was hard if not impossible to catch. According to them everyone had a tough time catching bait on Saturday. All their fish were caught on the points between Island Creek and the powerlines. They were using herring fishing flat lines and downrods.

Fished for striper today up near the dam. Lots of fish, but all had lockjaw. Probably over a dozen of us trolling around Marker 2 area most of the day, did not hear of any being caught though. Earlier I trolled down towards the dam and picked up a LMB off the red clay point close to the dam. Lost him in my other lines. Ended the day with another LMB up near Marker 2. He took a trolled white bucktail with white twister tail in about 35' of water. Lures were running about 30' down. Not a bad fish, measured 18" long.
Waited for a tourney to load up their boats at Flemingtown, saw some very nice bags of LMB brought in. Water was rising all day, just about the top of the ramps when I left and over the concrete part of the walk way, so likely on the road by now.

Went out on Saturday the 6th caught 4 Stripers and one Blue,  One Striper was about 16 inches the others all went 22-24 inches the small one came off of a gold spoon,  the other three were all caught using bucktails with green tail.  Fish were all caught deep in about 40-50ft of water.  (Fished a couple of hours in morning and couple of hours in evening.)  If I had of listened to the fish finder and lowered the downriggers down sooner perhaps could have done better most fish I was marking were from 40-60 ft and scattered no big schools just a fish here and there.  All fish were caught between the rock wall and buoy 2

I went out today and caught 7. All our fish were in 30-50ft of water and came on downlines. We were on the deep end of the lake. I'm with you; I'm gonna try to enjoy these next few weeks before it gets so hot .     Lanny

I was also at the bridge saturday mourning early, and caught bait and me and the other 2 guys that were with me, had a great fishing day. We were at Henderson point and then left and went to keats road. Of course we were bank fishing the biggest was a 30incher and 2 of us caught 3 stripers and the other caught 2, we also caught a dozen or more LMB, but we do not keep any of those. Several blues around 22 and 24 inches and as the night fell we headed back to henderson point and mopped up on the white perch, caught about 140 of those rascals bit they do make a nice little fillet. Use what bait we we had, I caught about 9 maybe 10 dozen at nutbush that mourining. I also seen many boats trolling and whatever else they do and seen them pulling in some fish also. I guess it pays to have a boat, But I will stick to my bank fishing until I see better days. Also has anyone been catching freshwater drum?

Steve and I should have moved down lake earlier, but went to the mouth of Grassy (and Airport) first.
We launched at Occ 2 and no success with bait there and then crossed over to the outlet pipe cove that I now name Mocc cove. Where did you try for bait that you had so few? I'm leaving shortly for Buffalo State Park launch to try for bait (learning). May go to Occ 1 and try there for bait. Maybe out to the old bridge under the remaining lights that Budman recommends. Since this seems to be an up all night fishing expedition, I may haul out of Occ 1 and launch at Rudd and then motor down to the main lake. Given that I find some bait and the GPS doesn't fail me. Some talk about being computer illiterate, but I'm electronics illiterate . . .
I thought I was seeing a thermocline and now realize that it was my down lines . Regards, ( Joy ) JTB

All our fish came from 25'-35' fishing 10 pulls or 20' deep. Main lake points for us too. Still wish my 11 yr old daughter would catch a nice blue cat.  http://kerrlake.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=3599

I too managed three stripers, no hawgs, 19 - 22". Also caught two catfish, 10 and 20 lbs. Now that was interesting on the long lines with a moving boat. http://kerrlake.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=3599

We were able to fish Kerr once again sat, and enjoyed ourselves every min. we were there. The stripers were most cooperative and we were able to boat several with the largest being a 10 pounder. The blue cats bit well also with a 15pounder being the biggest along with several others. All I can say is that the bite is on! It's a great time to be live bait fishing right now, in 3 or 4 weeks it will be so hot and the bite will change. All our fish came off main lake points while fishing 25 feetdeep. We got our bait at nutbush bridge before light. It was good to see some new faces from the message board as well as the ones we already know. Joy T Brew stopped by and said hello while on one of his picnics, I hope I'm still out there when I'm his age.

Worked on the boat for several days and it interrupted my getting on the water until Thursday. Made the launch at Rudd so I could look for bait and also check for humps on the way around the point between Butcher and Panhandle. My intent was to fish the upper side of the cove (Clyde's Island) where we ended our past Sunday fishing. Maybe Saturday will take to the mouth of Grassy if the fishing elsewhere is very slow. There had to be an omen about the events to unfold as the sky opened up and it was a torrential downfall all the way to Uppy's. Had to sit in the truck a while for the main storm to pass so I could get diesel. Meanwhile, the boat was filling with water faster than the drains could exhaust it. The guy at Bugg Island bait said the blueblack bait was at the old bridge pilings up until about Tuesday. The stripers were oinking them down too. After Tuesday, bait and stripers departed to an unknown destination. Surface water is 82 degrees and the themocline is at 40 feet. At the launch, all was going smooth, and only encountered light rain. All other boats were loading and getting out of Dodge. I launched anyway! Lots of wind and torrential rain by the time I left the dock. Didn't see any bait balls off the ramp or under the bridge. Kept the speed below wake all the way down and through the Cow Pasture. An occasional mark, but . . . I'm surprised at how similar the area is to the holding area in Eastland where I did so well a few weeks ago. As I approached the Honey Hole, the storm continued it's horrendous downpour, and got worse! Fortunately, one boat had it's bimini up and I could see him at the shoal marker through the heavy rain. Passed the Honey Hole and across the hump. Another boat was fishing, but the wind and rain forced me to head for the nearest tree line to get out of the wind and rain. The other boat headed for a sheltered cove also. The downpour kept up for about 20 minutes and my boat was again holding about 4 inches of water. Did a few speed circles to try to empty it, but the rain was coming too hard. OTOH, I understand that I wasn't the only crazy on the lake. Even so, I marked fish in the same location as last Sunday. No bait to speak of. Ha, ha, the remaining fish were waiting for the bait or missed the schooled stripers departure. By now, I had the trolling motor going and got two down lines set at 23 feet. the slippery bait was hard to hold onto with everything so wet. Several times, I had to chase the bait around the floor of the boat! Tiny SS minnows, but one 24 inch striper, a LM Bass, and a Blue opted for a small meal. That striper gave me all kinds of problems as I had the drift sock out to slow the boat in the wind and one free line became part of the boating. The blue was small and it got tossed. Circled the area for another hour, no more bites. Yet, still some huge marks on the sonar at 15 to 20 depth. Might have been the SS minnows weren't on the striper menu. The other boats were catching a few and tossing the stripers back. What a waste as they were floating belly up all the time I was in the area. The option to keep 4 of any size and STOP fishing for stripers appears to be a good law. I was now alone on the water and the storm renewed it's fury so I headed for the barn. Fortunately, the GPS worked as it should. Most of the time, the downfall was so intense I couldn't see any land marks.Got the boat loaded OK and realized I was wet up to I disagreecot and it was getting uncomfortable. Well, it wasn't all that bad as I got a couple of fish for the grease rather than my usual zero. Also, the new lights worked OK for loading the boat. Didn't get a chance to try the bait attracting green lights as I didn't get around to putting the right plug to power 'em. Besides, the weather wasn't good for sitting and waiting for the light to attract bait. Really exhausted from the cold, being wet, and battling the storm on the water and on the road. Put the fish on ice and got some sleep after dinner and meds. Still raining this morning and the forecast is for more of the same all day. The forecast for Saturday is for moderate wind, partial clouds, and very warm. No problem with launching at Occ 2 about 4 AM on Saturday. The SS bait wasn't doing all that well yesterday and I need to change the water. Thought about lake water, but the storm ended the thought. I'll think about going after SS minnows. I'm reluctant to drive all the way to Bobcat's or Buggs Island, but . . . There's a small bait shop at the entry to Staunton River State Park and it's only a 10 mile drive each way. Guess I save a lot on diesel by going local, but the bait is more expensive. I see many get bait across the lake from Occ 2 at the outlet from the power plant. Never went into the cove, but I'm doing a lot of things for the first time. Where we put lines down on Saturday is still a question to be answered. I'll keep channel 68 tuned in to get fishing reports! Ha, ha, this is my rainy day story and I'm standing by it . . .http://kerrlake.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=3590

BUGGS ISLAND LAKE—Bass fishing is picking up, with best fishing on the points, using plastic worms. Bass may be found on main channel points, humps and rises. Topwater baits or rapidly retrieved spinnerbaits are best early and late in the day. After the sun rises, pitch or cast grubs and plastic worms with 1/16 ounce weights past bushes, swim the lure back towards the bush and let it drop. Crappie fishing is excellent. Catfish are still hitting well on cut bait. Stripers may be had by trolling bucktails and Redfins, and by freelining live shad. Fishing is best at night and in the early morning hours between Bluestone Creek and Goat Island. White bass are being caught by crappie anglers. http://www.insidenova.com/isn/sports/columnists/article/fishing_report24/36869/

My son, his girlfriend and myself launched out of Occoneechee before dawn. Bait was much harder to catch than last Sun. Ended up with just the right amount of 6" herring with some big gizzards mixed in. Fished Turtle Cove all morning and we had caught 12 stripers by lunch with two keepers in the bunch. Caught several large white bass, LM and cats too. Caught fish both on freelines and down lines. We probably lost at least half as many as we caught. It was a fun day on Kerr with family. Budman

Striper Report 5-30-'09
Had a group from Winston-Salem on board Sat. and we really had a blast. The stripers were turned on for most of the day till 2pm when we quit. Total of 16 stripers and 5 blues. All stripers returned to the lake to be caught again hopefully. The fish seamed to like the nice herring that was caught fresh that morning. 24 feet on the down lines was the magic number. I also had 2 free lines out at 50 feet with one large split shot that was also paying off. Teacher and Baitbucket, I saw yall above me. Hope yall had the same luck. Its about time to start trolling for schooling fish but I dont troll and dont like to put back fish that I know will die. So I have about 2 weeks more to live bait and I will start targeting big blues.

I zeroed on both days. No help from the message board or from calls for help on the radio 68. Launched at Rudd on Sunday, covered the mouth of Butcher, Panhandle, Occ2, Island Creek Dam, and Eastland above the power lines. Lots of rain/wind until about noon, but we braved the temptest. the lake turned to glass as we dropped lines about Taylor's Island where there were lots of marks

Man! I guess I left about a little early but I was going on about 4 hours sleep in the last 48 hours at that point. I did OK, I was 1/2 inch shy of having to leave at 10am but I had a lot of fun watching the pros work! You know you are in the right spot when teacher hollers at you as you pass and then later on Ramrod drifts by you! I had the classic day: beautiful bait, lots of short striper that fought like pit bulls, one keeper striper, a two pound white bass, and too many blue cats to keep track of. Also had a billfish (longnosed gar) that fought as good as any fish on the water and lots of half-eaten baits. I even had the "one that got away" as I tried to solo manage 3 screaming reels as a sudden breeze pushed me into a shoal-I expertly managed to tally a big goose egg on that set....one of those big girls blazed off 50 yard of line before I could reach the reel. She now has some interesting peircing to show the friends.
Joy, I called out for you several times on 68 and 72. Sorry I missed you.

Fished Kerr sat. Great weather, water is near perfect, but the bite was a little slower than previous days for us. The last hour we fished was the best hour of the day, I think the bite turned on about 3pm and we finished with a bang and an empty bait tank.We wound up with 11 stripers 6 blues and a citation white bass. We'll post a few pics later. Good to see all the folks from the board out there,BAITBUCKET, JAYBEE,RAMROD,TEACHER, I don't believe the skunk had a chance of catching a ride on this day. It's a good time to be on the lake the fish are wide open. If you can't catch stripers now you need to take up golf. Hope to see everyone out there soon.take care        Teacher

Launched from Rudd this afternoon with a supply of SS minnows from Bobcats. Lively bait and I expected some success, though not like having lake shad. Didn't see a lot on the sonar until I got to the mouth of Butcher. But, the marks didn't like my bait. Had 20 foot downlines and a couple of freelines that seemed right in the fish at times, but . . .Made a pass through the Honey Hole. Lots of marks at the shoal buoy, but little else until I got out to the hump up river. Still nothing was interested in my presentations. Circled to the lake and then motored back to Panhandle. Noticed lots of flippers in the coves and decided to try my bait cast netting. Couldn't get in close enough and when I did, I came up empty. Out in the channel, the stripers were tearing the heck out of the shad. Used the TM to get close, but they were gone by the time I arrived and it was back to bait balls and a combination of near surface and suspended marks. Passed a few trolling the main lake, but . . . I'm in the SeaPro with the teal T-Top and almost always have 68 on. The stripers are sure eluding my efforts! That's my report . . .Regards, Joy T Brew

5/24 good and bad
The good - marked tons of fish around Satterwhite and on south past the two swim beaches and the little cove south of them. Fish were in water depths from about 25' to 35', mainly between 1/2 and 2/3 of the way down in the water column. Also marked several enormous bait balls, one running from just under the surface down to 30'. Most marks appeared large and in small packs. Crinkle cut french fry marks for the most part (not the inverted V marks of most fish, more like magic marker squiggles or french fries), which I have come to associate with striper, but could have been cats or largemouth. The bad - only had maybe two hits, and both of those got off. As expected, boat traffic was heavy and by 10:00 what had been fairly calm water was well stirred by wakes, and the wind actually blew through a few times. I called it a day with no catches at 12:30. Flemington was actually not that bad, lots of boats but still a little room in the lot and no real boneheads there today. Anyway, warmer weather seems to be getting the fish active again, I'll just blame the boat traffic for the lack of bites.

Sandy Creek bridge at Occoneechee was loaded with bait this am. I threw the net twice and had enough 6" herring for two boats. Caught 4 stripers at Turtles Cove but ended up above the bridges and caught 4 more there. Off the lake by lunch. Lost as many as I caught in both areas due to having a fish in the floor of the boat and another one on the line at the same time. No keepers but all in that 22" - 25" range. Still lots of fun. Caught some nice cats and LM too. The boat ramp at Occoneechee was crazy there were so many boats launching as I was leaving.  http://members4.boardhost.com/StriperChaser/msg/1243203945.html

Well the day started a little slow trying to catch bait but finally managed about 50-60 good size herring. The fishing also started out a little slow with just a couple pull downs. Called my man Teacher and Adam to see if they were on the lake and decided to head towards them. Asked them how they were doing and like always they told me they were on some fish. So whats a guy to do but put out some lines. Ended up catching 11 stripers and 1 little catfish. The stripers were average of 5-6 lbs to start and a 9 lb striper mixed in. Was talking to some folks on a pontoon boat when all of a sudden a downline rod gets slammed. Pulled in a nice 13 lb / 28" beautiful striper. Called it a day after that one and headed to the house.I really pride myself on finding my own fish most days but sometimes a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do, and thats find the Teacher and ask him and his son where the fish are. haha. Thx for putting me on some fish Teach/Adam.   Rip-N-Drag ( Bobby )  http://kerrlake.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=3524

Hit Eastland again yesterday and egged as far as stripers. Blues still hitting, but the stripers seemed to have moved out of the area or changed the bite to only in the morning. My younger grandkids are coming in this weekend and I plan to give them a chance for bigger fish. Really impressed my daughter and older grandson with the bite on Wed.
My first time fishing this time of year and I hope I can find the bite at the mouth of any one of the several creeks at mid lake. Is it too early for schoolies to be above Junkman's Curve?    Regards, JTB

Striper Report  5/20/09
Fished with a client from Raleigh on Wed. Had a ball baiting hooks and landing stripers.
We were about mid lake using blue back herring. Caught 15 in 3 hrs. All came on down lines.
Things were going along real nice till I was using the pliers to extract a hook from a lively 25 inch stripers. Yep you guessed it, The hook got me. Buried it behind my thumb nail. My client turned into a doc and got it out on the second try. It's ok but sore.

Made it to the launch south of Boydton about 5 PM and was on the fish in minutes. A fresh supply of jumbo SS minnows started slow with the only catfish I had on for the entire afternoon. The wind was horrendous, but I used it to advantage and drifted often. Caught one 28 inch striper and couldn't toss it back. After a dozen between 22-25 inches, I lost count. Again, a fire drill as I tried to keep 4 lines in the water - too many. Had several fish on the deck many times in the short period I fished. Guess some were really hungry as they took the SS minnow completely into the gullet. Had to cut the leaders. As you mentioned earlier, the evening came on, the fish moved to the shallow (20 feet down). While I struggled with landing stripers, I drifted over the 40 + water and lost a lot of time trying to get back with the TM in the wind. Had most of the lines on the deck and frequently used the outboard to get into drift position. Sure was fun!
Thought the conservation officer was going to check me out at the dock. He just sat in his truck and left before I hauled the boat out. I was back at the dock before dark? Hope they are still waitin' fer ya later in the week.

Good Report....we put in at 5am at Island Creek, tried for and hour to get bait we got 3,
3 weeks ago at Island Creek we caught a hundred in 30Min's filled both 30 gal tanks. Took along the down riggers, pulled umbrella rigs spoons, everything in the tackle box had a couple of trip off on the down riggers. We met up with you and used the few live baits we had and the 5 you gave us...we got a couple of strikes but no fish in the boat. 1st skunk in 2 years. I met RAMROD at the ramp when we were leaving and he told me he caught 11 Striper's and a 12lb Gar. AND HE CAUGHT HIS BAIT AT ISLAND CREEK! It was not our day....we looked for fish for 3 hours instead of fishing....This was my fault, we should have stayed put at high productivity points and we would not have got skunked....I heard a report that they were stacked up Friday the length of a football field in Eastland so I was on the hunt for that school. Well next week is coming...good to see you and Adam. (THE SKUNK BUCKET).

Adam & I got to fish Kerr yesterday! We had a pretty good day. We marked fish in several places that would not bite. Maybe the weather had them in pause mode. We started fishing at 6am, we were on top of fish and we didn't boat a striper until 730am, then they turned on until about 1030am during this time we put 5 stripers and 2 blues in the boat. One of the blues weighed 23lbs. We had to leave early so we loaded up at 2pm and missed the aft. & eve. bite. We will be back in a few days for a full day of fishing. The post spawn striper bite is here!!!The fish are all along the lake channel and trolling should be effective now. The water is in good shape, so let's go fishing and let's report on our trips. I saw 5 boats on the lake yesterday and they were live bait fishing for stripers and they belonged to people that look at this board Daily and they're not reporting. There is a whole lot going on that no one is reporting on. I'm not asking for you to give the location of your honeyholes or secret tackle tips. Just give us a report and be vague if you wish, but I know many out there would love to read your reports. later, teacher  http://kerrlake.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=3497

Made to the water on Sunday afternoon despite the rain and wind and had some success with SS minnows. A huge bull-frog pollywog that got in the bait tank too about a minute to hook up a huge blue. Got enough fish for the beer batter, but just doing the catchin' & toss back is lots of fun. All I can do to handle 4 rods and at times I must look like a Chinese Fire Drill in operation.

Saturday fishing  5/16/09
I went to Kerr Saturday and had a ball. I arrived at Yogi’s house at 3:45am. He had put a halogen light out at his boat dock the night before at 10:00pm and left it burning all night. He said he had been hearing the herring and threadfins spawning in his cove and thought this would make catching bait easier. Man was he right on time. When I got my things together and was walking from the truck to my boat, which was docked at one of Yogi’s slips, I could hear the bait thrashing about along the shoreline and all around his dock and his friends boat which was where the light was hanging over the water. He and I got in my boat and put the trolling motor down and trolled to the other side of his dock and had all the pretty bait we needed for a days fishing. We took off and headed to the fishing spot that Ramrod and a friend of mine had been fishing for the last two weeks. We fished till 11:00am and caught 2 stripers about 25 inches. I had to leave the water and figure a job in the area and then I returned at 1:00pm by myself and I whacked them good. I caught 7 more stripers (2 keepers) and over 20 catfish to 18lbs. ALL fish were released.
I am headed back Tuesday or Wednesday. The bite is on! Tight lines all! Lanny  http://www.tidalfish.com/forums/buggs-island-striper-club/261988-saturday-fishing.html

Can't say enough about putting me on the stripers and bait. Even though I got lost in the dark and it took me til 12 AM to find the dock, I had a great adventure. Went back today (Friday) and limited stripers and have several nice blues. A great day with all four rods bent many times simultaneously. Lots of 25 inchers, but managed several take home size. Great to be a member of a club that shares info to get members on the fish. Regards, JTB http://www.tidalfish.com/forums/buggs-island-striper-club/261316-where-stripers.html
Those fish have been there for 2 weeks going on three. I had 9 stripers with 2 keepers and over 20 nice blues.

5/14/09 BUGGS ISLAND LAKE - Stripers are being caught trolling Redfins and bucktails, 10-15 feet deep, in the main channel from Clarksville to Bowie Point. Broken back Redfins are producing well at night toward the dam and in Eastland Creek. There are also plenty of fish in the river. White bass are surfacing late in the evening, hitting small bucktails, Roostertails and small crankbaits. Bass are hitting good throughout the lake, with topwater baits and plastic worms producing best on points.

May 13, 2009, I launched at Island Creek, caught lots of stripers in Eastland, and then got lost in the dark. Took me til 12:30 AM to get back to load the boat. A real bummer and I was frazzled to say the least. Caught lot of 25 inchers before heading back to the launch. Went back Friday evening. Caught 4 keepers and tossed all back except for 2. Lots of blues and I kept the 4 largest ones. Just what I thought were good eatin size. The exciting adventure was having all four rods bent simultaneously several times. Fishing solo, it makes striper fishing everything it's supposed to be. Several times, I got all four hook ups landed . . .
That's my story and I'm sticking to it . . .Regards, Joy T Brew http://kerrlake.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=3456

Bluecat Express is mopping up on nice blues throwing a dia. plug from past gate 6 to the wall when the water is not running. Shad are really hit & miss. If I were to troll in Kerr this weekend, I'd start about the powerline close to Ivey hill.I'd head towards the Dr.'s house and junkmans curve. Not all the stripers go up at the same time. From now to about the 1st of June, I'd pull big baits. Cisco kids, cordells, rebels, something like that. Plus I'd pull what you were using last weekend. Some of the earlier spawners should be on the way back. Hope this helps. Good luck. setter  http://kerrlake.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=3308

4/26/09 Report
I launched again out of Occoneechee early morning. Same problem catching bait. Not sure what has happened this spring but we have seldom had trouble catching bait in Sandy Creek. Last several years the bait has been plentiful around the green lights at the old Clarksville Bridge but not so far in 2009. Crawdad was also there and he found the same hard time with bait. I caught all mine at the Sandy Creek Bridge but tried to help Crawdad find bait in the Marina Cove. We ended up just splitting what I had caught but it turned out to be enough for both boats. I fished up river from the mouth of Bluestone back down to the next buoy without seeing much bait or fish. Crawdad fished from Irish Creek up to Buffalo Creek catching a few cats along the way. I rode down the lake from the bridges to Goat Island and finally found a decent amount of bait pods around Junkman’s. We caught one throw back striper and put the boat on the trailer at noon. Water temp 68.5 deg., Sunny sky

I’m not sure what has happened to the striper fishing this spring. We had an exceptionally good winter fishing in Rudd’s Creek this year but it been a terrible spring for striper fishing. Every year through last year when the fish came through Clarksville in the spring there were several weeks of good fishing from Junkman’s to where the rivers split. I’ve been up there every weekend in April and have not seen the fish come through. Almost every year there would be boats on top of each other catching fish in the spring above the bridges but not this year. I’m not sure if it has the been the muddy water from all the rains or the cold nights and wild swings in water temps. Even if the fish have already gone up river it usually happens during a period of several weeks not just in a few days. Either all the stripers have not gone up into the rivers or they are not going at all but something is very different about the spring of 2009. (Budman)

Sunday 4-26
After I gave up trying to catch a catfish bottom fishing with cut perch, I ran the boat up to the Marker 2 area and trolled down to the dam and around to Striper City, then across the lake and back to Nutbush near the island. Marked fish here and there, and lost a small one near the island, but that was my only hit.Was basically following Whitetop around (I was the black and white bay boat) until he cut off across the lake. I did not hear any catch reports. So, other than a great day to be on the water, did anyone find any Striper Sunday?
I did see two very nice mixed bait/fish pods in 30' of water on the point near #2 around 10:30. They filled the screen from top to bottom with yellow and red, unfortunately that was when bait fishing and whatever they were, cut perch was not what they wanted.

Fionally went behind dam again Fri. 7 - 10 a.m. I have never seen so many people for a Fri. morning, not many stripers ( I only caught one 24"). The blues are really starting to pick up,sstiff backs (white perch) are showing up, have seen a few regular shad, & schools of gizzard shad. 4/23/09  BUGGS ISLAND LAKE—Downlake, bass are looking to nest in the back of creeks and coves. They are also present on secondary points, where Carolina-rigged lizards will take some good fish. With the water level at 303.5 and water temperature still in the high 50s and low 60s, the brush is flooded and bass are holding in the buckbrush, near spawning sites. Above the Clarks-ville bridge, bass are staging for the spawn, holding on drops in 8-12 feet of water, taking any kind of plastic bait, as long as it is not watermelon or green pumpkin. Almost every angler on the lake is throwing these color plastics and the fish have become used to them. Try a red, blue or pump-kinseed bait instead and see if you don't pick up fish behind them. Use the lightest sinker possible, as these fish are looking for a slow falling bait. Fish the backs of coves and pockets, particularly those with brush, adjacent to a creek channel. With the brush being flooded, the fish will be holding tight to the brush, adjacent to the creek channel. Do not pass up "nothing" type banks. Just because they don't have cover on them does not mean there are no fish available. Topwaters, such as gold or teal colored Rattling Rogues, will entice some bass, particularly early and late in the day. When the sun is up, toss blue flake power lizards into the middle of coves. Crappie are on brushpiles in eight feet of water and are taking live minnows. Stripers are up in the Dan and Staunton Rivers on their annual spawning run. Excellent white bass fishing in the upper reaches of the lake. http://www.insidenova.com/isn/sports/local/article/fishing_report19/34350/

Trolled from buoy 16 down to the powerlines yesterday. Pulled three sets of lures, three way rigs, with spoons, bucktails and a swimbait. Nothing. Marked a few scattered fish. Saw several people live baiting, didn't see a single hook-up.

My wife and I fished Sunday 4/19/09 launching out of Occoneechee. I caught bait in Sandy Creek but the bait is still not as abundant as in the past for this time of year. We did more house hunting for summer vacation instead of fishing but managed one throw back striper and a large catfish. Highest water temp 62.5 deg with mostly stained to muddy water above the bridges in Clarksville. Water clears up pretty good below the bridges and in the creeks. There is still some large debris in the lake that will do a lot of boat damage if you're not paying attention.  (Budman) http://members4.boardhost.com/StriperChaser/msg/1240233405.html

4/16/09   Fish are making their run toward the rivers and some are already in the rivers. Some fish never leave the lake. They run up major creeks like Bluestone, Grassy, Butchers & Eastland. Most of the fishermen are using jumbo minnows, shad and blueback herring. They also cast for them in the river with bucktails and Cotton Cordell redfins. http://www.kerrlake.info/fishing/

Hi All,
I decided to take a chance on the weather and launched at Longwood. Last I heard, the stripers were at the mouth of Grassy, but I motored to the honey hole to see if anythiing was doing. As soon as I got a planer in the water to sweep the bank, it went backwards. OK, things are looking good, but the striper was only 20 inches. Had another hook up, but it was 10 inches. Not that much bigger than my bait! Had two other hookup. One went under the boat and the line parted. Another just parted for reasons unknown.
Lots of LMB boats in the coves. Not too many rigs in parking area and that was nice! Looked like the schoolies were all little boys today. Maybe I'll do it again tomorrow as I still have some SS minnows. Bobcat's only had Jumbos today . . .
Hope to have a better report after tomorrow's fishing.

behind kerr dam 4/14/09
Seems the stripers that are being caught from boats are right at the limit line bouys towards the wall perpendicular to the main wall,,on fresh shad (1 or bigger oz. egg weight and not a shark size hook );; bucktails w/ fluke. Right now my freezer is full of stripers ,alot of nice fish ,but not but couple of citations. The catfish have really started to pick up , pitch fresh shad in 1st.hole & Boom. I've also caught & seen alot of walleye (good size ). One last thing , I know it's spring & every fisherperson has the itch to catch and land the big one, but please show patience and respect for your fellow angler. We're out there for the same reason - to have fun.

Saturday 4/11/09
Although the weather forecast for Saturday was for breezy conditions I still launched at Occoneechee hoping to find a wind break holding fish. Bait was much harder to catch in Sandy Creek than last weekend but I still managed to catch enough herring for the day. Started the morning fishing at the Airport and did mark a few fish in the area but had no takers. Moved back up the lake looking for a place out of the wind. The wind was blowing down the main lake and it was a pretty rough ride back to the bridges through the whitecaps. I stopped and fished along the RR trestle marking fish but only caught a few large cats. I went on up river but the only place to get out of the wind was just inside Bluestone but did not mark enough bait or fish to warrant staying. The area from the bridge in Bluestone back toward the main lake was wrapped up with catfish noodles. I had to weave through them just to get through that area. I don't see how anyone can call that fishing, it's just meat gathering and is a hazard to all the other boats on the lake. Going back to ramp was a much easier ride with the wind instead of against it. All and all it was a pretty sorry day to be on the lake. I should have saved the gas and stayed home. Water temps had fallen since last weekend down to 56.7 deg in the main lake. http://members4.boardhost.com/StriperChaser/msg/1239540449.html

BUGGS ISLAND LAKE—The water level is still coming up even though they are dumping water. Currently, it stands at 405 feet. The current has all the fish biting well. Stripers are biting on live shad, from buoy 10 to Bluestone Creek. Fishing is good in the upper end of the lake, as the strip-ers continue their spawning run. Red Fins and small Shad Raps are the prime lures, while three inch Sassy Shads are taking white bass, from Bluestone Creek upriver. Largemouth bass are taking spinnerbaits, Speed Shads and plastic grubs in the willow bushes on main lake points. These fish are in the pre-spawn mode, while the fish in the backs of the creeks are fanning beds and taking jig 'n pig and topwater lures.  http://www.insidenova.com/isn/sports/columnists/article/fishing_report17/33501/

I always heard about how stripers fight, but never had a chance to go after them. I went out late Sun afternoon, looking for some small cats to give the hot oil treatment to. I was drifting small minnows on a crappie hook with 8 lb test, and thought I hooked the bottom until it went the other way. After 10 minutes of chasing with the trolling motor, I had my first striper ever, 26 1/4 inches, just a hair under 8 lbs. Didn't expect anything but cats so I wasn't sure what was legal, so I put out a call on the radio. Many thanks to the captain who answered with the info. Now I understand why y'all spend so much time chasing 'em!

4/5/09 Launched at Occoneechee and caught plenty of herring with a few gizzards around the Sandy Creek Bridge. Water is pretty stained all over and lots of large debris from the bridges down to Junkmans. Caught 5 stripers with all being throwbacks mostly on main channel points from Clydes Island back to the bridges. Highest water temp for the day before we left at 2:00 was 58.8.  (Budman)

4/3/09  BUGGS ISLAND LAKE—Recent rains have raised the lake level to 303. Normal water level is 300. Stripers are biting well on live shad. Fishing is good from Nutbush Creek to Palmers Point, and from the mouth of Eastland Creek to Butchers Creek. The stripers appear to be moving up the lake, starting their spawning runs into the Dan and Staunton Rivers. Largemouth bass are taking spinnerbaits, Speed Shads and plastic grubs in the shallows, around rip rap and rocky points. Anglers fishing spinnerbaits in the buckbrush, are taking good sized bass. Crappie are in the process of spawning, with brushpiles being full of hand-sized crappies. Fish small minnows or jigs, 9-10 feet deep, over brushpiles. Stripers are being caught below Kerr dam, when the Corps is generating. Catfish are suckers for chicken livers or cut shad. http://www.insidenova.com/isn/sports/columnists/article/fishing_report16/33055/

4/2/09 Fish are starting to move towards the rivers for spawning. Good catches are being made in Grassy Creek of 6 to 10 lb. fish and a little larger in Eastland Creek. Most of the fishermen are trolling with planer boards using large shad and blueback herring.

Saturday March 29, 2009, 15 teams entered the Buggs Island Striper Club tournament with only 3 teams having fish big enough to weigh in. (must be 26")

3/29/09,  Yes, the weather was perfect. I dressed for torrential down pours that never came. Rather, the sweat inside my rain wear made up for the lack of weather. I marked fish all the way from the Honey Hole to Butcher, but only got one hooked up, a 22 inch toss back. The honey hole brought a huge blue for me and added an exciting moment for the day. Was I entered in the wrong contest? Seemed like there were lots of marks, but possibly my jumbo SS minnows were too large. Those hits I got pulled the planer backwards, or bent the down line, but . . . but . . .  Joy T Brew

3/29/09, once again the weather man lied !!! adam & I fished fri. & sat. and had a ball!! We didn't get any sunburn,, but it wasn't near as bad as they said it would be, actually sat' was a fine day on the water with practically no wind. The BISC tourney brought out 15 boats and I saw others I knew that were fishing for stripers and the usual number of bass boats for a sat. Iwas glad to see that others doubt the weatherman as I do. It was good to see everyone out there and I hope they all were as blessed as we were!!!!!

Fished Friday March 27, 2009 launching out of Occoneechee. The water conditions were very stained to muddy with large debris in the lake. Caught bait in Sandy creek and checked the lights at the old bridge but found nothing there. I fished the areas around the bridges to back into Bluestone. I found areas holding bait and fish but could get no takers other than a few large crappie and what appeared to be gar due to the way they bit but could not get them to the boat. Water temps up to 54.3 degs, cloudy skies, light winds, lake level 302.8 ft. (Budman)

my son & I fished kerr on 3/18 and had a blast. The bite is definitely on!!! The stripers are hungry,They eat everything we had in the bait tank. We fished 11 hrs. and used 60 shad and caught a mixed bag,,,mostly stripers, but also LMB and a big blue. We caught several stripers well over the 26 inch requirement and they were full of fight. It was awesome to here the drags screaming again, several times they were peeling drag as we got the rod out of the rod holder. It was our best day in a while.... We caught our bait at nutbush bridge,,,,, We launched at Ivy Hill,,,,We fished from Eastland creek to Island creek and caught stripers everywhere we put down. The creeks have clean water the main lake is a liile stained in places and cleaner in others. We noticed water temps from 49 to 51. The lake was good to us yesterday,,a picture will be posted on catch of the day with Adam holding up a couple of SOWS.

03-16-2008  deadriver   Stripers Kerr Lake on Sat.
Made a first trip to Kerr Friday night, got 2 hrs sleep, caught some bait and started learning the lake. Fished panhandle crk. for a 2 hrs or so with free lines and planers with no bites. Fished butchers crk. for about an hour with same rigs and 4 down lines, picked up a 25" fish crossing a hump with one of the down lines. Went to grassy crk, caught 3 on free lines in 10-15' of water, all 23" or so. It was a good start to a new lake in March and weather and the lake was beutiful. Water temp 54-55 degrees. The drive was not too bad from Apex so I will be fishing up there a good bit, with Jordan looking like the fish kill has hurt us. Bait was scattered, had to work at getting the bait....

3/7/09   JBee   Saturday fishing
Not a great day but good for my first trip out of the year. Took my Dad and bought some Jumbo Shiners from Mrs. Bobcat. Launched at Ivy Hill water temp was around 44. Went back in a creek where my Dad saw his first striper ever caught out of Kerr (he says over 50 years ago) and temps were around 47-48. Put out planer boards and immediately got a 25.5" fish ( he had to weigh at least 6 pounds and splashed me good when I released) when we crossed a point. Followed the loons up the creek after only a small cat I went back to the point and immediately hooked into a nice fat keeper. Had to leave at 1PM and by then the water on that point was 53. Only 5 hits all day but put 3 of those in the boat. Minnows did great(wish they would hit them all year...) even the ones I unhooked and put back in the bucket were still alive minus 1. All fish caught on planers with the "Crawdad Special" rig.Oh yeah, for all you diesel drivers, the Valero in Roxboro has the gold fuel for $1.77! Cheaper than regular unleaded!!!
