Buggs Island (Kerr)
Posted by Lew on June 30
Finished up my nic-nac list for the day and was left with the question... do I go fishing or stay home for a relaxing evening with the wife. Had the lines in the water by 6:00 p.m. Trolled for a while around the dam and the Rock Wall. Didn't marked anything. Moved on down towards Eastland Creek. Started marking some fish and lots of bait. Caught a couple of throw backs. Finally hooked up with a 8 lb. keeper to stink up the cooler. Lost one nice, nice fish at the boat off the downrigger rod. Just as I leaned forward with the net, he gave me one final shake of the head and checked out. Every fish caught was right at the mouth of Eastland. Got ran off the lake by a nasty, and I mean nasty, storm. Until next time, hopefully tomorrow, tight lines.

Put in at Island Creek about 8:00 AM Sunday morning. Caught a few shad and had live bait I had caught in my pond. Fished two hours, boated 3 stripers 6-11 pounds and two catfish, the biggest was about 7 pounds. Lost 4 more stripers, ran out of bait and went home. Fish were about 25 feet deep off a point near the power line at Ivey Hill.

Put in at North Bend ramp. Water is coming down some, no problems launching. Checked areas around Rock Wall and Eastland Creek, did'nt mark any fish or bait. I then moved on to location "X". Located a school of fish and proceded to catch several. Unfortunatley, this was the kindergarden class of the school. Every fish was 1/2" to 1" short. All were released alive and well. All fish were caught on buck tails on the south side of Goat Island.....oh, I mean uh location "X". Marked a bunch of fish in that area but the big ones are deep, 36 to 50 feet. The thermo-cline seemed to be running at about 30 feet. Nice day on the water though. On the bright side.... at least I don't have to clean the cooler. Anyone else having any luck????????

Started out trying to catch shad at the Milburnie Dam in Raleigh around lunch time. The only Gizzards I could catch were over 14" long and atleast 1-2 pounds, so I threw them back. I kept throwing the net and caught 2 stripers in the Milburnie tailrace. I got to North Bend around 3pm, and made the trip up the creek, OVER the Nutbush bridge, to the very back of Nutbush where I saw some scattered shad flipping. The water was so clear, I could see down to a school of shad to throw on top of, and they could see my net………couldn't catch a single shad. Ended up trolling bucktails and Sutton spoons around the Rock Wall and Palmer's point for 2 hours with no takers. I should have stayed in Raleigh to catch stripers.

Some ramps are closed because of the high water, which has been as high as 13 feet above normal this week. "The bass are so far back into the bushes, you need beagles to push them out and a hunting license to catch them," Jack Randolph said. Bobcat's Lake Country recommends fishing the clearer water in creeks to avoid the muddy lake water. Spinnerbaits and topwater lures are helping anglers catch the 12 to 13 pounds of fish necessary to win tournaments. Catfish of all sizes are thick below Kerr Dam, and Castle Heights Grocery is weighing citation cats, including trophies of 35-8 and 41-8. Diamond jigs are effective. Buggs Island Bait and Tackle weighed a 23.6 blue cat that came out of Bluestone Creek. Try jigging bucktails at the mouth of Grassy Creek or Rudd's Creek for school stripers of 8 to 13 pounds. Occasional crappie are being found around bridges and docks.

Water level at 314. Camped at North bend campgrounds due to the high waters. Sidekick, Pole Cat and Myself fished Friday night by the Rock Wall. It took awhile to get bait by the lights but we where able to catch some great Herring all night after they came around. The thermal line was running around 36 feet and that is where we caught three stripers with the biggest one weighing in at 13.7 pounds. Saturday night was about the same until the rain set in about 12:30 AM. We managed to catch one that was about 8 pounds. Sunday morning we got us and fished by the Great Island and picked up one more about 12 pounds. We picked up Lots of nice cats all weekend. Fun was had by all! Talking about catfish, they are catching truckloads of cat (BIG cats) off the catwalk below the dam. We stopped down and watched for a while and I know we seen a couple dozen 10 pound to 20 pound being caught. Most where caught on cut bait. What is the regulation on fishing below the Dam? Can you fish from the catwalk with a N.C. license?

The lake has been high and water has been running through Kerr Dam. Several boat ramps have been closed. Blue catfish are hitting diamond jigs and stripers are attacking live bait below the dam. Catfish from 38 to 49 pounds and stripers of 19 and 27 pounds have been weighed at Castle Heights Grocery. In the lower end of the lake, a few stripers are hitting live bait in the day and Red Fins at night. No crappie are being caught. Shellcrackers of ¾ pound to 1-8 are feeding in the flooded grass and can be caught on red wigglers. In the Clarksville area, a few crappie are being caught around bridge abutments. Bass are being caught below the mud line, which has extended as far down as Island Creek, but fishing has slowed. Use jigs and lizards for occasional largemouth of 2 to 3 pounds. Some catfish of 20 to 30 pounds also are being weighed.

Hello everyone,
I am trying to give fishing reports as often as I can, I think it is good for the fishery and the club. Went out
early and fished between marker 6 and 10. Caught some 3 to 4 inch shad at ivy hill ramp (dock). Lost 2
nice stripers, both hit on live bait. Also did some Trolling with leaded line, soft plastic shad and light spoon
(double rig setup) had no luck. Thanks for all the fishing updates, this club sure beats Smith Mountain Lake
striper club. Good fishing to you all

See Crawdads post below, they did pretty good sitting on the RR tressel up from Bullocksville. Me and
Bud's Girl ended up at the Rockwall Friday night to get out of the wind.. It was pretty tough trying to
navigate through the Cut Thru at night. After (3) try's I ended up going around the island. Bait came to the
lights real quick and the catfish and white perch kept me busy most of the night, but only one throw back
striper. We had loads of fun and did a little fishing too. Quite an adventure to be on Kerr at night, all night.
I'd forgotten how bad it feels the next day without sleep and how hard it is to tie on hooks at night.

Friday night was very good! Sidekick And I ended up with 4 keepers and at least that many though backs.
The largest ran 14.5 LBS. The bait was slow to come to the lights but once it did the fun began. The cats
and the white perch were all nihgt long. Saturday night was good also.
We boated two Keepers and three though backs. LOTS of catfish(no great sizes).
We fished the RR tresel in Nutbush Creek. We anchored in the channel where the RR tresel drops off
into the channel ~65 ft of water droped submesable lights. We caught all our fish on downrods 40 ft deep.
The bait of the day was small Herring, 4" to 6".
Good times!!!
Rockchaser Caught 3 nice keepers also. He fished the same area.
Nice to see Budman,BudGirl,Doctor and Nightowl....

Buggs Island Lake:
Hugh Hamby at the Castle Heights Store said fishing
remains slow below Kerr Dam. Above the dam, from the dam up five or six buoys,
trollers are catching small stripers, up to 23 inches, with an occasional
ten-pounder showing up. From the Clarksville Sports Center, we hear that a couple
of blue catfish in the 20 to 25 pound range were caught along with a 13-pound
gar. They say trollers operating from Buoys 5 to 15 are catching some stripers on Red Fins. Live
bait anglers are catching some, too. The lake at 300 plus feet is at full pool.

Buggs Island Lake:
From the Clarksville Sports Center, we hear that fishing for bass and stripers is picking up,
but crappie are a little slow, although there is considerable crappie fishing around the bridge
abutments. From Bobcat's Lake Country in Clarksville, we hear that stripers are deep, feeding
on shad. At his Castle Heights Store near Kerr Dam, Hugh Hamby said fishing below the dam has
been slow because of little water being run through the dam. When the water is running the fishing for
stripers is good, but most are small. Further down the Roanoke River a striper weighing 24 pounds,
10 ounces was caught. Striped bass fishing in the lower end of the lake is good and the stripers are being
caught trolling. The water levelin Buggs Island Lake is 301 feet, which is a foot above full pool.

have been two and just lost one. Just put up the rods and took my daughter tubing after that.

about 10  lbs.and a white bass. Lost 2 nice stripers at boat. Lots of boats Junkmans to about 18. Heard on radio

Was up late Fri. afternoon. Heard they had an awesome early morning (between 16 and 17)(one boat said he
had 11  stripers and a cooler of cats). Nothin doin fri afternoon until just before dark when I heard reports of
them being schooled on the Occonechee side by Bouy 17. Saw one caught and about a 15lber in another guy's cooler.
They must have  scattered cause thats all we saw. Caught one greenie but otherwise in the wrong place at the
wrong time, i guess.  Sending in my registration today for the club. Unfortunatly I wont be there for the
tournament/meeting, have a wedding to  go to. Hopefully, I will get a chance to meet with all of you real soon.
Good luck tommorow ( I would get there early) WharfRat

Crawdad and friends night fished Kerr Lake anchored at the submerged RR tracks near Bullocksville on June 12,  1999.
Caught 7 stripers.  All caught on live herring 45' down.  No hits on shad. Used underwater lights to attract bait.

I fished the first seven days in June all day at Kerr Lake. I come up every year for the first
week in June and stay at the Lake Motel Efficiencies. I caught one striper about 12 pounds
June 1 on the north side of goat island. The next 4 days I caught nothing at all, I fished from
mouth of the rivers, Bluestone creek, the bridges and goat island. June 6 me an my cousin and
brother caught nine stripers schooling late afternoon in grassy creek. June 7 and the last day for
my vacation my boat caught seven stripers off of the red bank near goat island. One of the
striped bass I caught at 45 ft and weighed 23 pounds, he is sitting at the taxidermist right now.

My son and I fished for stripers near the dam on June 5 from 8am till 1pm. Tried trolling
umbrella lures and lightning shad in 80 feet of water. Saw a couple of fish on the depth sounder,
but they were very scattered. Saw one boat catch about a 10 pounder on a jig with a green
trailer. There were about 6 boats fishing in the vicinity. Do not believe that we saw any shad
schools on the sounder.    Submitted by: PrdMasters@aol.com

My buddy and I fished from 6:00 AM to 1:30 PM at Kerr Lake Dam and just off Striper
Point. We slow trolled live bait (small bream) and various crank baits for over 4 hours without
   a strike.

Just about the time we were going to give up and head for the hill, I decided to try something
new. We tied on some new crank baits we had just purchased from Dick's, large "Lightning
Shad" , blue tint. These are very agressive deep running crank baits, and will run 25-30 ft deep
   when trolled at high speed.

We almost immediately had our first strike of the day, and boated a nice 8-1/2 pounder. About
45 minutes later..another strike,,,and we boated a beauty, 12-1/2 pounds. Since we had now
used up both the trolling motor batteries, we decided to call it a day. An especially good day
because I caught the biggest Striper.

We caught both fish in approx 85 feet of water, off Striper Point.

Wish I knew what we would have done if we had started with the Lightning Shad in the
morning. You can bet we will next time.    Submitted by: wayne.l.parker@worldnet.att.net
